Detail of Katrina: Aftermath

Earth Tree   Black Iron, patinas

“I am a tree hugger. It almost hurts to see them deteriorating from new diseases (Sudden Oak Death, in my neighborhood), or from fires raging out of control. Nature is struggling to stay in balance.  Just look at this poor tree, ravaged by unnatural conditions.  Yet as it decays, it still has a strange beauty, even in final stages of life.  I wanted to preserve the tree; not to let it go completely.  So I made it of steel, as a lasting reminder of the final stage.”
